Mozilla, the company behind FireFox, the browser that took the crown from IE as the most popular browser on the web is announcing the launch of JetPack, an open-source project that aims to create browser add-on’s easier for people who may have an idea or two. This can be compared to the way apple has allowed users, developers and just anybody who has an idea or two to author apps for their online store which has topped the apps sale records. Firefox has quite a number of notable plugins and add-ons yet they still cannot compare to the overall customization they may have envisioned for their browser.
IE has suffered form similar problems, unable to take the demand for more customization options for their browser which has resulted in a closed system, with company dictated updates that cannot be fiddled with easily. This may explain the fact why IE remains to be one of the most prominent targets of attacks on the internet being in the sights of hackers since time immemorial. Jetpack being open-sourced would allow more customization options within a pre-set framework that allows easy, standardized and easily deployable form that would give more control to users in their drive to exact more control on their web experience.
According to Mozilla,
“We want to grow our community of developers by orders of magnitude through making add-on creation much more accessible and yet more powerful by developing it as an extensible platform for innovation itself.”
This would open the doors for more innovation as the company aims to open up more of the options to the users rather than keep it within the walls of their set standards further expanding the reach and capabilities of the browser and the whole experience itself.
